If there was a series where everything went wrong, I would nominate the most recent series against the Tigers. For the first time since 1966, the Detroit Tigers swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Everything about the Yankees was pathetic. The pitching. The offense. The mental errors. The injuries.

Let’s recap the last three days.

Day 1 of the Tigers series saw the Yankees lose A-Rod to the DL. Home runs by Sheffield and Granderson sank the Yankees behind satisfactory pitching by Hughes.

Day 2 of the series again proved pathetic as Pettitte was not effective and Polanco homered twice. We discovered that Hughes is going on the DL with some kind of injury.

Day 3 comes and the announcement is that Hughes will be out for around two months with a fractured rib. Abreu hit a three-run blast in the first inning and nothing else really happened for the Yankees. Kennedy was not effective, again. At least he got a no-decision.

I don’t want to talk about this series ever again — it was just too embarrassing, pathetic, and sad.

Instead I’m looking forward to Wang vs. the Mariners’ new “ace” Erik Bedard. Then tomorrow I’ll be at the House that Ruth Built as I bring my little girl there for the first time so she can be christened there.
