Amongst all the hoopla surrounding CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe, how did this blog miss free agent pitcher Ben Sheets?  These days, all indications currently show Burnett going to Atlanta.   Sabathia clearly does not want to play for the Yankees, otherwise he would have jumped on that $140 Million like a fat kid on a cupcake.  And Lowe is a classic free agent/slut.  He’s all over the place, playing every team to see who will give him the most for his goods.

But Ben Sheets is a good pitcher.  Check out these stats:  198 1/3 innings this year, had a 3.09 ERA, made the All-Star team and pitched to a 13-9 record (a career high.)  Boasts a career record of 86-83, with a 3.72 ERA a 1.22 WHIP, in 221 starts.

Compare them with these: 221 1/3 innings, a 4.07 ERA, no All-Star team but posted a 18-10 win/loss (a career high) with a career record of 87-76, a 3.81 career ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, in 211 starts.

The second group of stats belongs to Burnett.  He is 31; Sheets is 30.  Anyone else thinking they might be the same exact pitcher?  Both have played for pretty crappy teams most of their careers.  Although, Burnett did earn a ring with Florida in 2003.

I wonder if Sheets can take his career to the next level with a great lineup behind him.  I also wonder if he might be picked up at a cost lower then Burnett.
