Now that the news I broke a couple of days ago seems like some kind of smoke screen and that the Red Sox are still highly interested in Mark Teixeira, the Yankees have been closely watching the saga for one reason:

Manny Ramirez.

Mark Feinsand wrote this morning that the Yankees are watching what happens with the Tex sweepstakes and will probably make an offer to Ramirez after Tex is signed, and that is probably for sure that if the Angels don’t get Tex, they will probably go after Ramirez too, but that doesn’t make sense to me as the Angels already have Vlad Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera and Gary Mathews, Jr. Why add a 5th outfielder?

Feinsand writes that the Yankees aren’t interested in Tex because they don’t want to add a player in a contract that is the “better part of a decade” but are willing to look for a shorter contract, akin to what they could get with Ramirez.

The Yankees clearly took themselves out of the Tex race when they traded for Nick Swisher a month ago.
