The Tampa Bay Rays signed former Phillie Pat Burrell to a 2 year, $16 Million deal. Burrell will reportedly be the Ray’s DH most of the time. Burrell is a nine-year veteran and his spent his entire career with the Phillies. Although he is not known for his batting average, Burrell is quite the slugger. He is on pace for 500 HRs in his career and have a career .485 slugging percentage.
The interesting thing to note about this deal is the price – Burrell made $14.25 Million in ’08 and $13.25 Million in ’07 – so why the drop in salary? The only thing I can think of is the current market conditions for outfielders are amazingly bad.
The Rays had seriously been pursuing Milton Bradley, Burrell and Jason Giambi. Bradley signed with the Cubs for # years, $30 Million. Now that the Rays have signed Burrell, it appears that Giambi might be heading back to the Oakland A’s – where he spent the first part of his career.
