Most everyone prefers to hear bad news before good news. The bad news? The Yankees lost their third straight spring training game. The good? The Yankees’ offense was awesome today.
This afternoon, the Yankees lost to the Cincinnati Reds 13-11 when their pitchers coughed up the game. Every pitcher except Mark Melancon allowed an earned run. Most of the damage this afternoon came from the arm of Al Aceves and Christian Garcia. Between the two of them, the Reds scored 7 runs. Jonathan Albaladejo, J.B. Cox, Damaso Marte and Brian Bruney all also allowed runs. Melancon did allow a run, but it was not earned. All told, the Yankee pitchers allowed 14 hits and 13 runs.
The Yankees offense showed up in droves today. Led by Derek Jeter on his last game before the WBC, went 3 for 3, all singles, and two runs. Robbie Cano also went 3 for 3 with a homer, a double, and 4 RBI. Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, and Kevin Cash all went 2 for 3. A-Rod had 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Tex had one run, and Cash had a double and a run. Plus Little G (Brett Gardner) continued his torrid pace in the centerfield race. He hit his second homer, and a double in going 2 for 3 in the afternoon. Gardner is now batting .500. Tex is also batting .500 and Cano is leading the team with a .556 BA.
