Since my schedule allows me to watch most of the game live today, I will post updates after the third, sixth and a final recap.
2:05pm End of Third Inning
Score 2-1, USA leading the Yanks
Hughes– Pitched well through 2 & 2/3 innings. Threw 41 pitches, 25 for strikes, including two strikeouts. Allowed two walks, including hitting Granderson with a pitch. Derek Jeter then hit a 2RBI single scoring Granderson and McCann. Phil Coke is pitching next, he faces Dunn, Youkilis and Braun in the top of the 4th.
Gardener – Has two singles in his two at bats. After his first inning single, he scored on a single by Jorge Posada. Gardener followed up his third-inning single with a nice stolen base. Gardener is looking very good this game and this spring – I’m pretty sure he is hitting over .500.
3:19 PM – End of 6th – 6-4, USA leading.
4th Inning – Coke throws a 1-2-3 inning with one K. USA Starter Oswalt replaced by Ziegler…Jeter is looking good defensively, he ranged well to his left, did the trademark Jeter turn and whipped a throw to Kevin Youkilis, who couldn’t scoop the one-bounce throw…Cody Ransom gets credit for the hit and promptly steals second…He’s left hanging on base….
5th Inning – Michael Kay interviews Joe Girardi who is happy with Hughes‘ pitching today. Girardi also feels that Hughes has worked hard this offseason to prove himself. He thinks Hughes will be a great pitcher this season. Coke throws another 1-2-3 inning. In 2 & 1/3 innings, Coke allowed 1 hit with 2 K’s and no BB.
Gardner is looking great! Another hit! This time a two-out double up the left-field line. He is now 3-3 on the day, and 8-13 this spring! Teixeira promptly strikes out, leaving Gardener on base.
6th Inning – Coke replaced with Eric Hacker. Swisher replaced Teixeira, Cabrera replaced Gardener. Hacker pitched Double-A last year. He pitches…horribly. Faces six hitters, all six make it on base, three with hits, three with walks. He allowed 4 runs. Michael Dunn replaces Hacker. Dunn ends the inning. Score 6-1.
Posada singles, Nady singles, Ransom singles. Rodriguez scores, after pinch running for Posada. Ransom is also having a good game today. Swisher‘s first AB results in a ground-rule double, scoring Nady and Ransom. Yankees now have 10 hits in the game, USA has 6 hits. The score is now 6-4.
A lot of talk has been about the Yankees bench being weak. After the last few games, I am starting to think a little more highly of the bench, especially Ransom and Swisher.
7th Inning – David Robertson replaces Dunn – after Dunn allows a double to Jeter. So Jeter is either on FIRE today, or the Yankees pitchers are taking it a little easy on him. I’m going to say its a little of both. Robertson manages to get out of the inning cleanly. The Yankees side strikesout in the bottom of the inning.
At this point, I need to leave, so check in later for more info. If anything big happens in the final innings, I will post it here later tonight.
Game Over – The Yankees scored another run in the bottom of the 9th, but it was not enough to catch the USA team. The game ends 6-5, despite the Yankees getting 13 hits, and allowing only 6 hits. After this game, I am excited about how the Yanks played, but a little worried about team USA. Only 6 hits off of the Yankees minor league pitchers?
