Bryan Hoch, who covers the Yanks for MLB.com, posted on his blog today two interesting stories. First being that closer Mariano Rivera is scheduled to pitch for the first time this spring in a bullpen session on Thursday at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Rivera had arthroscopic surgery during the off-season on his throwing shoulder. Hoch says Rivera is on schedule to appear in a game on or near March 17.
Hoch also reports that Brian Giese, pitching during Wednesday’s spring training game, was not supposed to swing during his at bat in the fifth inning. In fact, Hoch reports that skipper Joe Girardi was shouting from the dugout “Don’t swing!” Giese swung anyways and hit a single. He later scored on a triple by Johnny Damon.
It seems to me that Giese was so fired up to be at-bat, that all he could think about was getting a hit. Good for him. I love the attitude.
