On a night where we might have seen the return of Derek Jeter (we didn’t), we saw the Yankees manhandle the Pittsburgh Pirates pitching en route to a 9-2 victory.

Rebounding from a troublesome start last Wednesday against the Tigers, CC Sabathia struck out seven over four innings of one-run ball, walking one. Mariano Rivera made his first spring appearance as he comes back from arthroscopic shoulder surgery, pitching a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts. Edwar Ramirez and Al Aceves also pitched well.

Hideki Matsui put New York on the board in the first inning with a two-run double to right, then belted a two-run homer in the third inning, his first dinger of the spring. Melky Cabrera added an RBI double, Ramiro Pena stroked a run-scoring single and Jorge Posada punched a two-run single to center in the Yankees’ six-run third.

The Yankees will face the Astros in Kissimmee, Fla., at 1:05 p.m. Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang gets the ball — with no designated-hitter rule in effect. Yankees are now 10-8-1.
