In a move we all saw coming, the Yankees sent starting pitcher Phil Hughes to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. This had to happen. Hughes has had an exceptional spring, which was preceded by a great off-season. Hughes would most likely be in the rotation of most other big league squads. With the Yanks rotation already loaded, Hughes will perform as the #1 starter over in Scranton and the “Sixth Man” in NY.
Hughes will most likely be the man called up to replace an injured pitcher in the Yanks lineup.
“He had a very good spring for us,” skipper Joe Girardi said Saturday. “I thought he attacked the zone. The thing is, we ran out of innings for him here and we want him stretched out. We can’t do that here. We were very happy with the progress he made over the fall, into the spring, where he came from last year.”
