Tyler Kepner of the Times on his blog wrote that he believes the bullpen is actually better than we give it credit for. With Brian Bruney about to get off the DL tomorrow, the Yankees have seen quality starts from Al Aceves, Phil Coke, Phil Hughes, and Dave Robertson. Here’s the stats, according to Kepner:

We’re halfway through June, and this is what Aceves, Coke, Hughes and Robertson have done this month: in 23 innings, they have combined to allow 16 hits, nine walks and just five earned runs, with 26 strikeouts.

That’s a 1.96 E.R.A. spread across four setup men, with Bruney now added to the mix.

With Bruney and his decent arm, the bullpen will only get better. The only problem? The starting rotation needs to get to the seventh inning to give the ball to the bullpen. Tomorrow CC Sabathia will start doing that and hopefully that will rub off on the rest of the starting rotation.
