The Yankees and Mets begin their last three game series of the year tonight at CitiField, the new home of the Mets.  The Yankees took two of three from the Mets two weeks ago at the new Yankee Stadium, including a 15-0 beat down in the rubber game.

The Yankees had gotten lucky in the first game, winning on an error by 2B Luis Castillo with two outs that allowed 2 runs to score and erase an 8-7 Mets win and replace it with a 9-8 Yankees victory. No doubt the Mets will be out looking for revenge for those two losses – especially the 15-0 game which saw the Yankees smack around their ace, Johan Santana.

Much attention will be paid to CC Sabathia, the Yankees ace who left his last start with an apparent injury in his throwing elbow.  He has stated several times since that he is fine and will make his start Friday night as planned.  Despite showering him with money this offseason, Sabathia has not been the dominating pitcher the Yankees hoped he would be.  In 15 starts this season, he has had only 9 quality starts, for a 6-4 record.

Alex Rodriguez has been on an upswing recently since taking off two days to rest his injured hip.  Since those days off, he is hitting .313 (5-16) with 8 RBI, 1 HR and 3 RS.   He was expected to take Friday night off, but due to his great performance so far, the Yankees feel that Monday’s scheduled day off should be enough to keep him healthy.

Overall the Yankees have been hampered in recent games by a lack of offense that caused them to lose 4 of 6 games against two horrible teams, the Washington Nationals and Florida Marlins.  After losing the first game to the Atlanta Braves, the Yankees took the next two to win their first series since facing the Mets.

The Mets have been killed by injuries this season, losing Carlos Delgado, Oliver Peres and Jose Reyes earlier in the season.  To add fuel to the fire, the Mets had to place All-Star CF Carlos Beltran on the 15-day DL last week.

They are lead by 3B David Wright, most likely the best hitting third baseman in the Majors this season.  Wright is having the best year of his career, hitting .356.  Unfortunately, he only has 39 RBI’s which is the fault of the guys in front of him in the lineup failing to get on base.

The Yankees have not been able to beat the Mets in a season series in 6 years, since sweeping them 6-0 in 2003.  They were 2-4 in 2008, 3-3 in 2007, 3-3 in 2006, 3-3 in 2005, and 2-4 in 2004.
