ESPN.com is citing a “source close to the situation” in reporting that Army and Notre Dame will play in a football game at the new Yankee Stadium in the fall of 2010.

Army and Notre Dame used to play each other annually when both teams were powerhouses in college football from 1925 to 1946, however the teams have not faced each other at Yankee Stadium since 1969.

When contacted by ESPN, an athletic department associate neither confirmed or denied that it was happening.  However, ARMY announced that it would have a major announcement on Monday at the stadium.  It is unclear if they meant Yankee Stadium or Army’s home football stadium.

The Times-Herald Record, a newspaper in upstate Orange County, cited sources when reporting that Army will also play games in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and that opponents could be Rutgers and Syracuse Universities.

“I think it’s great. I’m excited to watch it — as long as they don’t do it in September,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Friday when asked by the AP for comment.
